DNS Reference Information

What are DNS records?

DNS records tell the internet where to find your website or service. For example, an A record points to an IP address, while a CNAME record points to another domain. If you're not sure what you need, just add the records you know about, and we can help with the rest during setup.

AIPv4 Address

Example: IPv4 address (e.g., 192.168.1.1)

AAAAIPv6 Address

Example: IPv6 address (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334)

CNAMEDomain Alias

Example: domain name (e.g., your-site.github.io)

URLRedirect

Example: URL to redirect to (e.g., https://example.com)

TXTText Record

Example: text value (e.g., v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all)

SRVService Record

SRV records have four components:

  • Priority: Lower values have higher priority (e.g., 0)
  • Weight: Relative weight for records with same priority (e.g., 5)
  • Port: Port number of the service (e.g., 25565 for Minecraft)
  • Target: Hostname of the server (e.g., mc.example.com)

Not sure which records to add?

Start with just one record type that you know you need. Our team can help you configure additional records during the setup process.

Common examples: A record for IP addresses, CNAME for GitHub Pages, SRV for Minecraft servers
